Bunnies in the Backyard

Updated: Feb 2

While my mom and brother were about to leave the house, they saw a mother bunny running off, and they saw the baby bunnies lying outside the nest

Although they look very strange, they will soon grow up to become those fluffy cute bunnies you commonly see in parks.

Newborn bunny

As you can see, the baby has its eyes closed. This is because the eyes are not fully developed yet, so the body will close the eyes to protect the eyes before they're ready and developed. Also, their eyes are very sensitive, fragile, and too delicate for bright lights. All in all, illumination will hurt their eye tissues.

What happens to the bunnies?

Unlike chickens, the mother rabbit will not be at the nest all the time. They do not sit or stay at the nests when the babies are born. This comes with a lot of risks. It attracts a lot of predators. So, the babies burrow to the bottom of the nest to hide from the predators until the mother rabbit comes back to feed them.

Food Supply

It is a rare occurrence to see a mother rabbit nursing her babies, as the mother only comes once (sometimes twice) for only 5-10 minutes. the mother rabbit will give the babies the rich milk, which will sustain the babies for 24 hours.

Growing Up

Of course, the bunnies need to grow up eventually. They open their eyes after 6-10 days, when their eyes are fully developed. After a week or so, the baby bunnies are weaned (they get adjusted to their adult diet, and are removed from milk)

Baby bunnies will grow up and become fully independent after 3-6 weeks. They will leave the nest and will fend for themselves.

As they leave the nest, one of their objectives is to reproduce. After about 3-6 months, they are ready to reproduce and harness a family.
